Children love to ask questions. As they grow, their questions evolve. When they’re young, you might hear, “How do you spell…?” But as they get older, the questions change: “Hey Dad, can I borrow the car?” (Most four-year-olds don’t ask that one—and if they did, finding a creative answer beyond “no” would be a challenge!)
Yet one question seems to follow children through every stage of life: Why? It’s a question that can spring from genuine curiosity or from disagreement with what they’ve just heard. “Why is the answer this?” “Why can’t I stay out later?” “Why do we have to go to Aunt Jane’s every Thanksgiving?” Why, why, why.
The Bible is also filled with “why” questions. Recently, I came across one while reading the account of the first Passover in Exodus 12. As Moses gave instructions for how the Israelites were to observe the Passover, he told the elders: “When you enter the land the Lord has promised to give you, you will continue to observe this ceremony. Then your children will ask, ‘What does this ceremony mean?’ And you will reply, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, for He passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt. Though He struck down the Egyptians, He spared our families.’” — Exodus 12:25–27 (NLT)
In other words, Moses was preparing them for a future “why” question: Why do we celebrate this meal year after year? The answer wasn’t because they loved flatbread and bitter herbs—it was because the meal reminded them of God’s faithfulness. This tradition ensured that even generations who hadn’t witnessed the original Passover would still hear the story of God’s deliverance and know His steadfast love.
At Faith Lutheran School, we share that same purpose. Each day, children are reminded of God’s faithfulness—when they study His Word, observe Christian living in action, and experience His grace through the kindness of others. Our mission is to prepare every child to be a faithful disciple of Christ, equipped for the unique calling and vocation God has already planned for them.
School is a wonderful place for questions. As children ask “why” to grow in knowledge of the world, they also grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus. It’s our vision that each child at Faith Lutheran School grows more confident each day in their identity as a beloved child of God. As they do so, they will discover “why” they matter – because they are God’s precious and redeemed creation.
